Mokuah Becomes National Champion as Strong Day Three Earns Men and Women Track & Field Teams Top Ten Finishes at NAIA Outdoor National Championships

Marion, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men and women track teams entered the 2024 NAIA Outdoor National Championships as two of the top teams in the country. The Warriors would get off to a slow start overall on the leaderboard through days one and two, but competed well in the field events and had lots of athletes move through the prelims and into the finals on those days, setting up a huge day three for the Orange & Black. In the end, both teams would finish in the top ten overall with the women placing 4th out of 68 and the men placing 8th out of 77.

Evelyn Dolce was one of the standout performers for the Warriors at the meet, earning All-American honors in the pole vault as a freshman on day one. On day three, four individuals, including Lisa Voyles in the 1500m, Diego Sekiyama-Nava in the 400 hurdles, Soyinne Grenyion in the 400m and 200m, and Jamaya Warthen in the 100m and 200m, would earn All-American honors as well as the women's and men's 4x100m teams consisting of Kiya Pogue, Soyinne Grenyion, Derica Gibson, and Jamaya Warthen and Davarri Barthell, Esau Haynes, David Slick, and Justin Harper. The performance of the meet would come from Collins Mokuah as he became the national champion in the 400 hurdles, setting a new school record in 50.80 seconds, while he also breaks a school record in the 110 hurdles, finishing as runner up and All-American in 13.90.

Additional meet highlights:
Day 1 – Wednesday:
  • In the first track event at nationals, the women's 4x400 team of Pogue, Grenyion, Warthen, Gibson cruised to a heat one win in a time of 45.02. That was the #2 qualifier into the final and just off the team's season best of 45.02.
  • The men's 4x100 team of Barthell, Rush, Harper, Slick earned an automatic qualifier to the final with a Heat 2 win in 40.56.
  • Lisa Voyles advanced to the 1500m finals with a prelim heat win in 4:36.09. Krista Boese finished 15th in 4:47.01 and did not move on.
  • Evelyn Dolce closed out her freshman campaign with All-American honors in the pole vault! She tied her own freshman class record at 3.75m on her way to a 6th place finish and 3 team points. She becomes Tech's first female outdoor pole vault All-American since 2015!
  • Collins Mokuah (52.79) and Diego Sekiyama-Nava (53.34) both advanced to the 400h final.
  • The Warriors advanced two to the finals in the women's 200m. Soyinne Grenyion (23.24) qualified 2nd in the prelims while Jamaya Warthen (23.77) was the 9th and final entry into the final.
  • Ryah DiGiacomo finished 16th in the nation in the javelin with a final toss of 40.29m.
  • Carlie Turner (9th, 5.75m) and Valerie Nzeakor (12th, 5.56m) finished just outside the scoring spots in the women's long jump.
Day 2 – Thursday:
  • Kiya Pogue advanced to the finals in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.20.
  • Collins Mokuah will represent Tech in the finals of the men's 110 hurdles after a prelim run of 14.09.
  • Lisa Voyles took her heat of the women's 800m in 2:10.82 to advance to Friday's final.
  • Jamaya Warthen moved on to the finals in the women's 100m with a prelim mark of 11.65.
  • Soyinne Grenyion took her heat of the 400 meters in 54.41 to move on to Friday's final.
Day 3 – Friday:
  • Collins Mokuah caps off his week with a national championship and school record in the 400 hurdles in 50.80! He's the third Warrior to win the event at nationals and the first since 2015 (Deshawn Woods). Mokuah becomes the first Tech hurdler to go under 51 in the 400 hurdles! He surpasses the previous school record of 51.12, set by Robert Rose in 2014.
  • Diego Sekiyama-Nava earns All-America honors with an 8th place finish in the 400 hurdles in 54.18.
  • Soyinne Grenyion is your national runner-up in the 200 meters in 23.49. She is now a 20-time All-American, tied for the most in school history with Shayla France and Brianna Woods.
  • Jamaya Warthen adds another All-America honor with a 4th place finish in the 200 meters in 23.56.
  • Collins Mokuah adds to a phenomenal meet with a national runner-up finish in the 110 hurdles in a school record of 13.90. Mokuah tops one of the longest standing records in school history! His new standard of 13.90 in the 110 hurdles tops the previous mark of 13.98, set by Rod Waters in 2008.
  • Soyinne Grenyion earns All-American honors in the 400 meters with a 3rd place finish in a school record time of 52.91. Grenyion breaks the previous school record mark of 53.42, set by Kirsten Flake in 2013.
  • Lisa Voyles closes out one of the most decorated careers in Indiana Tech history with her 15th All-American honor after a 2nd place finish in the 1500 meters in 4:23.90.
  • The quartet of Kiya Pogue, Soyinne Grenyion, Derica Gibson, and Jamaya Warthen sets a new school record in the 4x100 relay in 44.57 as they finish as national runner-up. The previous record of 44.85 was set by Woods, France, Thomas, and Cooper back in 2014.
  • The quartet of Davarri Barthell, Esau Haynes, David Slick, and Justin Harper finish with a 4th place finish in the 4x100 relay with a time of 40.00.
 
The Warriors wrap up their 2024 outdoor season in impressive fashion with top ten finishes. The women would finish with six All-Americans and a 4th place finish. The men finish with one national champion, six All-Americans, and an 8th place finish.
