DETROIT – The Indiana Tech volleyball team got back on the winning track by besting host Marygrove College (5-19, 2-14 WHAC) in four sets at the Mustangs' 'Pink Out' night. The Warriors (13-11, 8-8 WHAC) took the last two sets (27-25, 25-23) after splitting the first two (25-17, 21-25) in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play Wednesday night. The Orange and Black started behind in each of the four sets before rallying back in three of the four.
Indiana Tech lost the first two points of the first set before taking a 4-3 lead. The Warriors would never relinquish that lead and finished strong with the final five points for a 25-17 win.
In the second set, both teams played it close to the vest with seven ties. The Mustangs would get a four-point swing to break a 17-17 tie, but Tech came back with the next three to make it 20-21. The teams traded points at 21-22 before Marygrove would take the final three for their lone win at 21-25.
The Mustangs carried 10-6 leads in both the third and fourth sets, but could not stop the Orange and Black rally. In the third set, Marygrove led most of the way up until the end when the Warriors tied the set at 24. With the set then tied at 25 apiece, Tech secured the final two points for the 27-25 win.
The fourth set saw Tech overcome a four-point deficit at 10-6 and take the lead for good at 13-12. Down the stretch the Warriors held three leads of five points before securing the victory at 25-23.
Leading the attack for Tech was
Christine Foest with 18 kills, followed by
Katelyn St. Martin with 13 and
Stacy Nagy at 10.
Karli Jones and
Emileen Palka had all but eight of the team's 59 assists with the former registering 26 to the latter's 25.
Taylor Kelso registered 25 digs, while
Elizabeth Mathews added 13 and St. Martin 11.
Tech next hosts the Liz Lykowski Tournament this weekend with four matches. The Orange and Black will face Indiana University Southeast at 2 p.m. and Point Park University at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24. Then on Saturday, Oct. 25, the Warriors will play the University of Saint Francis at 10 a.m. followed by a 2:30 p.m. match against St. Catharine College.
