TOLEDO, Ohio – The Indiana Tech baseball team gained yet another conference victory on Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 decision over Lourdes at Mercy Field.
Earning his first win for the 2016-17 slate, senior right-hander
Jared Harvey pitched six innings and struck out seven while not allowing an earned run from the Gray Wolves. Senior
Alex Delk would come in in relief to Harvey, and throw three strong innings en route to his first save for the season.
Right fielder
Peyton Newsom provided a strong performance offensively for the Orange and Black going 4-5 at the plate with three RBI's off a single in the first inning and a triple to close out the ninth for the Warriors.
Matt Bandor followed Newsom in the first, driving in an additional run off a singe on a 1-2 count.
Ryan Meisenheimer rounded out the scoring for Tech off a fly ball to center in the second scoring
Charlie Sipe and then coming home on a wild pitch in the ninth.
With the help of back-to-back walks to put Meisenheimer and
Keith Tatum on base, following up with
Glen McClain taking his free base, the third walk of the top half of the inning, Newsom crushed a single to left with two outs, providing the Warriors with a strong start and a 2-0 lead.
Meisenheimer increased Tech's lead in the top of the second, scoring Sipe from third, who reached on a triple, with a sacrifice fly.
Through three, Harvey remained strong, tying up Lourdes hitters before giving up the lone run in the bottom of the fourth off a single to left, scoring the runner at third.
Reaching base, this time on a four-pitch walk, Meisenheimer led off for the Warriors in the top of the ninth. With two outs, after advancing to third on a sac bunt from Tatum and a ground out prior, Meisenheimer added to the lead scoring on a wild pitch, granting a 5-1 advantage. Down to the final out of the inning, on an 0-2 count, Newsom came from behind to slug a triple into right center, scoring Barksdale from first who pinch ran for McClain after being hit by a pitch, increasing Tech's lead to five.
Delk closed out the remaining three innings for the Orange and Black, receiving help from his shortstop,
Dante Biagini, on two consecutive ground outs before closing the game on a line out back at the mound.
Tech (3-1, 3-1 WHAC) and Lourdes will be back at it tomorrow for a Sunday doubleheader matinee at Mercy Field with the first game slated to start at 11 a.m.
