GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The fourth-seeded Indiana Tech baseball team fell to top-seeded and Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) regular season champion Madonna, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon at DeWitt Field at Cornerstone University in the WHAC Tournament. The loss was the Warriors first of the tournament.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a leadoff followed by a pair of groundouts. Tech would respond in the second as
Glen McClain led off the inning with a single up the middle and would come around to score two batters later as
Keith Tatum would drive a pitch up the middle to tie it up at one.
Madonna retook the lead in the fifth with a pair of doubles and Matt Deneau picking up a pair of RBI's and put the Orange and Black in a 3-1 hole.
Taylor Grzelakowski would then hit a solo home run to right in the seventh to chase Sterrett as Wiesman would come in. The Crusaders then draw a pair of walks and used a bunt single to load the bases with one out before Shane Dokey cleared the bases with a double to left and make it a 7-1 ball game. They visitors on the scoreboard would add another run to make it 8-1 heading into the final two and a half innings.
The Orange and Black would load the bases in the eighth with a hit batsman, a single and a walk, but were unable to push a run across as the Crusaders would give the Warriors their first loss of the conference tournament.
Sterrett finished his outing with six innings and giving up four runs, all earned, on five hits and a walk while striking out three. McClain would finish the game 2-3 with a walk and a run while
Peyton Newsom drew a pair of walks. Tatum would 1-3 with a walk and the Warriors lone RBI.
Tech (37-17) will take on second-seeded Davenport at 2:20 p.m. from DeWitt Field in an elimination game in the WHAC Tournament. Links to live stats and video will be available at IndianaTechWarriors.com.
