Warriors Hold Off Wolverines to Get Back in Win Column

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 18-ranked Indiana Tech men's basketball team rebounded from a tough loss to No. 1-ranked Cornerstone on Saturday as they held off a pesky University of Michigan-Dearborn team, 89-84, on Wednesday evening at the Schaefer Center.

Miles Robinson led all scorers with 37 points, just one off his career-high, going 12-19 from the floor, 5-8 from the three-point line and a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line, while dishing out five assists and grabbing five rebounds. Tanner Watkins had 19 points while CJ Bussey added 12 off the bench, while each knocked down four triples, and Bussey going a perfect 4-4 from downtown, while as a team the Warriors would shot 60.9% from three-point range. Scott Schwieterman chipped in eight points and four rebounds and Lavonte Davis had six points and seven rebounds.

The Warriors would get out to a 19-12 after the first seven minutes of the game, with Robinson scoring 12 of the team's first 19 points. Tech would extend its lead to as much as nine following a Watkins three-pointer at the 9:20 mark, but the Wolverines, who knocked off No. 8-ranked Davenport last Wednesday to sweep the season series with the Panthers, would not go down without a fight, cutting the lead down to four with 4:50 to go in the first half.

Bussey would nail three straight triples to push the hosts lead back up to seven, but UM-Dearborn would score the last five points of the half to cut the deficit to 41-39 at the break.

The two sides would trade baskets through the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the Orange and Black would use a 5-0 spurt from Robinson to make it an eight-point game with 9:17 to go. Undeterred, the Wolverines would use a 12-4 run to tie the game up at 69 with 6:35 left in the game.

The two teams continued to swap leads and tie changes throughout the final five minutes, with a 76-76 tie on the Schaefer Center scoreboard with 3:07on the clock. Michigan-Dearborn would take a three one-point leads in the last three minutes, but the Warriors would respond every time, with Watkins and Robinson hitting clutch baskets at each turn, with Davis would grab the offensive rebound off a Watkins miss and put it back in to give Tech an 85-84 lead with 1:12 remaining.

The Orange and Black would then turn up the defensive intensity, forcing the Wolverines into tough shots from behind the three-point line while Robinson would knock down four free throws in the last 27 seconds to ice the game and exact revenge from their earlier defeat to UM-Dearborn.

Tech (17-6, 12-3 WHAC) returns to action on Saturday as they host Lourdes in their Alumni Day. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
