UPLAND, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team extended its winning streak to six games with a sweep over regional rival Taylor on Thursday afternoon, winning 6-4 in game one and 7-3 in game two at Winterholter Field.
Peyton Newsom would put the Warriors on the board first in the second inning with a one-out RBI double to score
Tighe Koehring while
Matt Bandor would drive in Koehring in the fourth with a single to left field to make it a 2-0 game.
Tech would take advantage of three hits and a pair of walks to push three more runs across the plate in the fifth to go up 5-0 as Koehring drove in
Glen McClain while Newsome knocked in two more runs two batters later with a single to center.
The Trojans would make things interesting in the seventh as they scored three runs to cut the deficit to 6-4 with one out, but
Jacob Koehring would get the final two outs to close out the game and give
Johnny Crawford his second win of the season. The starter from Wapakoneta, Ohio throw five strong innings of three-hit baseball, allowing just one earned run while striking out six.
The hosts would take the early lead in the nightcap as they would plate a run on a sacrifice fly to center, but
Charlie Sipe would end the threat on the play as he hit McClain on the cutoff as the Warriors first baseman nailed the runner at third to get Tech out of the inning.
Newsom would continue his torrid day with another RBI in the second as he drove in
Matt Bandor with a single to left while
Benny Clark III would deliver a big-two out hit in the fourth as he doubled home Newsom and
David Barksdale to make it a 4-2 game.
Rico Caravalho would knock in a pair of insurance runs with a single in the fifth and a double in the seventh while
Jacob Gomez closed out the game strong with three swinging strikeouts in the sixth and stranding a pair of runners in scoring position in the seventh to earn his first win of the year. He would go four innings in relief with seven strikeouts and giving up just one hit.
Tech (11-3) concludes their three-game set with Taylor on Friday as they play a single-nine inning game in Upland. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. from Winterholter Field.
