FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 19-ranked Indiana Tech baseball team fell to Madonna, 8-7, on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field in the finale of their three-game Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) series.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Warriors in the first inning, using three doubles and a pair of walks to chase starter
Jason Sterrett after just one inning of work.
Shoma Sasaki would put the Warriors on the board with a two-out triple in the bottom of the second to score
Tighe Koehring and
Peyton Newsom while
Charlie Sipe knocked in Sasaki with a single through the right side to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Newsom would tie the game on a 1-0 count in the fourth as he drilled his eighth homer of the season to left center field, but Madonna would respond with two solo shots in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead.
The visitors would tack on another pair of runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 8-5, but the Warriors would not go down quietly, tacking on runs in the seventh and ninth innings but coming a run short as Madonna snapped the Orange and Black's eight-game winning streak.
Koehring finished the day with three RBI's and went 3-4 at the plate with a homer, while
Keith Tatum added a double.
Alex Delk went four innings in relief, allowing two runs on five hits.
Tech (34-10, 20-5 WHAC) returns to action Tuesday as they host No. 24-ranked Huntington for a single-nine inning game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. from Warrior Field.
