GREENVILLE, S.C. – The No. 4-seeded and No. 4-ranked Indiana Tech women's lacrosse team fell in a back-and-forth contest to the tournament's top-seeded SCAD-Savannah, 14-13, in the semifinal round of the NAIA National Invitational on Friday night at Sirrine Stadium.
After a quick start from the Bees that included three straight goals in under four minutes, the Warriors were quick to respond with three goals of their own, led off with the free position shot from
Kristina Scott at 24:27.
McKenna Mesclier would follow Scott with an assist from
Jennifer Banks to put Tech within one.
Heidi Tremaine's goal off the
Bailey Childs assist at the twenty-one-minute mark set the score even at 3-3.
The remainder of the first half highlighted the two teams trading leads with Banks finding the back of the cage around the halfway point and
Sam Vikstrom netting her first goal of the contest at 12:25 to create a 5-5 tie. Mesclier and Tremaine each took advantage of free position shots, respectively, for scores as the Warriors sat behind SCAD 8-7 at the end of the half.
Vikstrom and Scott each turned in unassisted goals within the first four minutes of the second half, at 29:13 and 26:59 respectively, to give the Warriors a 9-8 lead. The Bees always found a way to answer back though by turning in three consecutive scores for an 11-9 advantage. As a part of a dominant game for Warrior captain, Scott answered SCAD with back-to-back free position goals at 20:14 and 19:31.
Banks and Childs would each throw in a score to force a 13-13 tie with under five minutes remaining in regulation. Strong defense from Tech held the Bees out of the cage, until they found themselves a man-up with just over a minute remaining. Sydney Knego utilized the advantage for SCAD and found the back of the cage on a free position shot with nine seconds remaining, to go ahead 14-13. The Warriors were left with one final look as time expired, but could not grab the quick score to force extra time and saw their season come to a close.
Scott led the scoring effort for Tech with four goals, while Mesclier, Banks, Tremaine and Vikstrom each checked in with two scores of their own. In goal,
Sydney Davis collected fourteen saves for the Warriors.
With the semifinal round exit at the NAIA National Invitational, Tech concluded their 2017 campaign 15-5.
