LIMA, Ohio – The No. 4-seeded and No. 18-ranked Indiana Tech baseball saw its run in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament come to an end on Monday afternoon as they fell to top-seeded and No. 7-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio, 4-0, at St. Rita's Sports Complex.
The Racers scored the game-winning run in bottom of the first inning as Jeff Cardenas singled to left to score leadoff man Kyle Fisher from second. The game would live up to its billing of a pitchers' duel between two of the best pitchers in the WHAC with
Cody Kellar and Damon Proctor going toe-to-toe with complete game performances.
Kellar would allow all four runs, just two earned, in eight innings of work, as the senior scatted 10 hits in the tough loss, while Proctor, the WHAC Pitcher of the Year, struck out 10 Warriors in nine innings and scattering seven hits in his outing.
Tech had an opportunity to push a run across in the fifth after
Matt Bandor was hit by a pitch and
Peyton Newsom notched an infield single with just one out. A sacrifice bunt by
Dominic Giuliani would move the two to second and third with two outs, but
Benny Clark III would fly out to right to end the rally.
UNOH would add insurance runs in the seventh and eighth with an RBI single from Carlos Baerga, Jr. before taking advantage of a pair of Warrior errors in the eighth to extend their lead to 4-0.
Bandor would get on following an error on the Racers third baseman in the top of the ninth while
Branson Dossen got a pinch-hit single to extend the inning, but Proctor would cap his outing with his 12
th strikeout of the day to hand the Warriors their first shutout of the year and eliminate them from the WHAC Tournament.
Glen McClain went 2-4 at the plate while Bandor finished the afternoon 1-3.
Tech (41-12) will now wait to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round, scheduled for May 15-18 at one of nine campus sites. The NAIA will announce the official field for the Opening Round, made up of 31 automatic berths and 14 at-large berths, on Thursday, May 11 at 4 p.m. via the
