FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech NAIA men's ice hockey team ended their 2017-18 regular season home schedule on a high note against Lindenwood University-Belleville Saturday evening, dispatching the visiting Lynx 3-0 inside the SportONE/Parkview Ice House on Senior Day.
"I was really happy with our effort again tonight," head coach
Frank DiCristofaro said. "We had a lot of special teams situations early on and we were able to capitalize. (Zach) Larson was strong in net and it was great to see the seniors win in their last regular season home game."
After a defensive stronghold by both sides in the first period,
Adam Jonak opened the evening's scoring for the Warriors four minutes into the second frame on an Indiana Tech power play. The Orange and Black increased their lead once more just over five minutes later when
Alex Gregorich beat the visiting netminder on another power play halfway through the stanza. With the 2-0 advantage, the home side would then be forced to fight off two Lynx power plays to maintain the lead before the horn sounded to end the second period.
Freshman
Stavros Soilis continued his impressive weekend by scoring his third goal of the series at the 13:38 mark in the final 20 minutes to add the exclamation point to the victory.
Defensively, the Warriors' special teams unit proved vital to the winning effort, killing five Lynx penalties in the contest to maintain the shutout. Meanwhile, senior goalie
Zach Larson stymied the visiting offense, deflecting away 25 shots on the night to record his first shutout and seventh total win of the season.
With Saturday's victory, Indiana Tech would cap off a season series sweep of Lindenwood University-Belleville, having defeated the visitors four times this year.
The Warriors (21-8-2) will now break from action until next Thursday evening, March 1, when they travel to Adrian College for a 7:15 p.m. puck drop. They will return home Friday to Fort Wayne following their northward trip to host the inaugural WHAC tournament. Indiana Tech will open their quest for a conference championship against No. 3-seeded Aquinas College Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the SportONE/Parkview Ice House.
