FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team swept Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe Aquinas on Monday afternoon in a doubleheader, winning 5-1 in game one and closing out the twin bill with a 12-2 victory in seven innings at Warrior Field. The sweep improves the Warriors conference winning streak to seven games.
The Saints scored first off a one-out double in the fourth and limited the Warriors to just one hit through the first five innings of play. Tech struck in the sixth thanks to a two-out RBI single from
Tighe Koehring to score
Dante Biagini and tie the game up at one, while a perfectly executed double steal from
Glen McClain and
Daniel Johnson II gave the Orange and Black the lead in the next at-bat.
McClain tacked on two more runs in the eight with a double left center while
Ryan Meisenheimer made it a 5-1 game with a single to right, providing more than enough offense for
Nate McBroom and
Jared Harvey. McBroom pitched seven strong innings in the start, allowing just the one run on seven hits while striking out six batters, while Harvey pitched the final two innings to preserve the win, allowing just one hit and a walk and striking out three.
Game two saw Tech strike right away as Koehring knocked in McClain with an RBI single to left center, while
Jake Ritson took advantage of an overthrow to second base on a pickoff attempt to put the hosts up 2-0 after an inning of play. The Orange and Black tacked on four more runs in the second as they took advantage of two walks, a hit-batsman, an error and a double to take a 6-0 lead.
Aquinas managed to chase starter
Jason Sterrett in the sixth after a leadoff walk and a single, and put two runs on the board to cut the deficit to 8-2, but a bases-clearing double from
Branson Dossen and a single from Johnson extended Tech's lead to 12-2 in the bottom half of the frame.
Dan Shaw came on in the seventh to close out the game and worked a quick 1-2-3 inning and give the Warriors the win after seven innings of play.
Sterrett picked up his sixth win of the season after going five innings on the mound, allowing just two runs on six hits and striking out seven.
Tech (18-14, 12-2 WHAC) returns to action this weekend as they host the University of Michigan-Dearborn in a three-game set starting Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. from Warrior Field.
