FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indian Tech baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games on Monday afternoon as they defeated Lawrence Tech, 13-2 (F/7) and 12-5, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action at Warrior Field.
The Warriors jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning as they used four hits and took advantage of two errors to get ahead.
Dante Biagini drove in the first run of the day with a single to left while the hosts had two more runners cross the plate in the next at-bat off a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt from
Shoma Sasaki.
A sacrifice fly from
Matt Bandor and a double from
Glen McClain put two more runs on the board in the third to go ahead 8-0. Lawrence Tech got the two runs back in the top half of the fourth thanks to a ground-rule double and a bunt single, but the hosts pushed their advantage to 10-2 off a
Dillin Diehm RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to
Dominic Giuliani in the sixth. Tech invoked the 10-run mercy rule in the seventh as
Glen McClain launched a towering homer to right center to give the Warriors the 13-2 victory.
Nate McBroom picked up his fifth win of the season with a complete game performance as he scatted seven hits over the seven innings and striking out five. McClain finished with a game-high four RBI's and went 2-3 with three runs, while Diehm went 2-3 with a run.
The visitors took the lead right away in the second game as they scored off a balk, but Tech came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame off a
Ryan Meisenheimer single that scored
Matt Bandor and Sasaki. LTU would not go away though as they scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead, only to see the Orange and Black put up a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.
A five-run sixth, highlighted by a solo shot from Biagini, an RBI single from Meisenheimer and a three-run homer from
Bobby Bennett, gave Tech the lead for good while they tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to complete the sweep with the 12-5 win.
Jared Harvey picked up the win after coming on in relief of
Jason Sterrett, throwing three innings of two-run ball, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Meisenheimer and Bennett each drove in three runs with the former going 3-5 at the plate.
Tech (21-14, 14-2 WHAC) returns to action Tuesday as they make the short trip to North Manchester, Indiana for a matchup with NCAA Division III foe Manchester University. First pitch is set for 4:15 p.m. from Gratz Field.
