Warriors Fall to Bees in National Invitational Title Game

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 3-ranked and No. 3-seeded Indiana Tech women's lacrosse team fell to No. 1-ranked and No. 1-seeded Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), 18-11, in the NAIA National Invitational Title game Saturday afternoon at the Aquinas College Athletic Field.

The Warriors struck first in the title game, their first-ever in the NAIA postseason and their third all-time, just over two minutes into the contest as McKenna Mesclier put one in the back of the cage. SCAD responded quickly though with a 3-0 run to go up 3-1 with 21:17 left in the first half. Tech battled back to cut the deficit down to 4-3 with 13:08 left in the opening half, but the Bees ended the period on a 6-1 run to take a 10-5 lead into the locker room.

The defending National Invitational champions came swarming out of the locker room for the second half, responding to a goal from Jennifer Banks 41 seconds into the period with a 6-0 run over the next nine minutes to extend their advantage to 16-6 with 21:54 to go in the game. Sam Vikstrom attempted to rally the Orange and Black with four goals over the last 15 minutes to cut the deficit to seven goals, but it was not enough as the Bees repeated as the National Invitational champions.

Vikstrom managed to etch her name into the record books one more time in the final game of her career as became the program's all-time leader in goals as she scored for the 204th time in her illustrious career with 59 seconds left in the game to pass former standout Kendall Guthrie (2011-14) for the top spot in the Tech annals. The three-time Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Defensive Player of the Year finished the game with five goals, five ground balls, six draw controls and two caused turnovers and garnered All-Tournament honors for the second year in a row.

Vikstrom was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Childs, Mackenzie Barnes and Sydney Davis. Childs had two goals, six draw controls while Davis made 12 saves in the cage. Tech finishes the season with a record of 18-4, the most wins in program history.
