Warriors Down Tigers to Advance to NAIA Semifinals

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 3-ranked and No. 3-seeded Indiana Tech women's lacrosse team opened NAIA National Invitational play Wednesday morning with an 18-9 victory over No. 6-ranked and No. 6-seeded Georgetown College at the Aquinas College Athletic Field. The win moves the Warriors into the semifinals of the National Invitational for the second consecutive season in a rematch from last year's quarterfinal matchup.

The Warriors got off to a quick start as Sam Vikstrom scored the first of her eight goals just 66 seconds into the opening game of the tournament while Jennifer Banks made it a 2-0 game at the 28:12 mark. The Tigers got on the scoreboard with 24:58 on the clock, but Tech responded quickly with a 3-0 run to take a 5-1 lead at the 19:48 mark.

Georgetown cut the deficit down to 6-4 with 11:36 to play until the half, only to see Vikstrom score four goals over the next eight minutes as the Orange and Black headed into the locker room leading 11-4. Vikstrom found the back of the cage for her eighth goal of the day at the 22:04 mark in the second half to continue what would be a 10-run from the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) regular season champions as they took a commanding 16-4 lead with 15:11 to go in the game.

The Tigers got on a bit of a roll in the late stages of the game as they cut the deficit to 17-9 with 3:55 to go in the game, but it would not be enough as Tech knocked out the Tigers for the second straight year from the National Invitational.

Vikstrom finished with nine points, three ground balls, three caused turnovers and four draw controls while Kristina Scott and Banks each notched a hat trick. Bailey Childs dished out four assists with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sydney Davis made 10 saves in the cage to pick up the win.

Tech (17-3) will now face off with No. 2-ranked and No. 2-seeded University of the Cumberlands in the semifinals on Friday. Opening draw is set for 10 a.m. from the Aquinas College Athletic Field.
