Warriors Split With Trojans to Begin March

UPLAND, Ind. – The No. 22-ranked Indiana Tech baseball team split a pair of games with regional foe Taylor University Friday afternoon at Winterholter Field, falling 5-4 in game one before taking game two 2-0.

Trevor MacDonald put the Warriors up 1-0 in the second inning of game one with an RBI single down the left field line while Javier Castaneda made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single in the fourth inning. The Trojans came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a two-out homer from TJ Bass to take the lead.

A Branson Dossen RBI single would tie the game up at 3-3 in the fifth, but Taylor responded with two more runs in the bottom of the frame to go ahead for good at 5-3. Castaneda cut the hosts lead down to one in the top of the sixth with an RBI groundout following a triple from Jake DeFries, but the Trojans would get out of a jam in the seventh where Tech had game-tying run on third and the go-ahead run on first with two outs.

DeFries and Kyle Harvey each had a pair of hits while the former scored three times. Nate McBroom scattered five hits across 4.1 innings of work in the loss.

The lone offense in game two came in the fourth inning as Glen McClain led off the inning with a single. Following a sacrifice bunt and back-to-back walks to DeFries and Jacob Alvidrez, MacDonald doubled to left center to drive in McClain and DeFries, giving starter Charles Dunavan plenty of run support as the lefty struck out eight and scattered three hits across four innings to pick up the win. Dan Shaw came on in the fifth and finished out the game by allowing just one hit and striking out three to pick up the save.

Tech (8-3) returns to action Saturday as they conclude their weekend set with Taylor. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Winterholter Field.
