Lewiston Bound, Warriors Knock Out Patriots to Advance to NAIA World Series

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – For the first time since 2003, the Indiana Tech baseball team is headed to the NAIA World Series as the No. 23-ranked team-in the country defeated No. 5-ranked University of the Cumberlands, 6-4, on Wednesday evening inside Doyle Buhl Stadium in the championship game of the Williamsburg Bracket of the NAIA Opening Round. The Warriors will be making their seventh trip to the final site of the NAIA Baseball National Championship and their first trip since six straight appearances from 1998-2003.

Branson Dossen put the Warriors up 2-0 in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer to left field on a 2-2 count while an RBI single from Jake Ritson made it a 3-0 game in the fourth. The Patriots tied it up with two runs in the sixth thanks to a two-run shot of their own after scoring their first run of the game one inning prior.

Tech came right back with two more runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead thanks to an RBI double from Jake DeFries and a suicide squeeze bunt from Ritson. Reese Olden pushed the lead to three runs as he scored on a double from Dossen in the seventh. Tanner Perkins came on in the eighth and got out of a bases-loaded jam with just one run scoring and closed out the game with the save to send the Warriors into a dog pile frenzy for the third straight week.

Dossen and DeFries each collected three hits with the former driving in three runs and both players scoring twice. Sorensen picked up the win by going 6.2 innings on the hill and striking out 10 batters while allowing just three runs on five hits.

Tech (41-14-1) will take a 10-game winning streak to Harris Field on the campus of Lewis-Clark  State College for the Avista NAIA World Series, which runs May 24-31. The Warriors will find out their seeding and opponent for the 10-team event on Thursday.
