GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech women's volleyball team dropped its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) contest on Friday evening, falling 3-1 (21-25, 16-25, 25-20, 13-25) to Cornerstone University inside Mol Arena.
An early 7-1 run from Cornerstone propelled the hosts in the opening set before they jumped ahead 15-9. Tech gradually chipped away at their hosts lead to come within one, 18-17, and would hold close up until the end of the set. A 4-1 streak would grant Cornerstone the 25-21 victory though.
The Golden Eagles grabbed a six point lead midway through set two. Although the Warriors attempted to get themselves back in the match, they would fall victim to a seven point spurt from Cornerstone put in 2-0 hole in the match.
Set three turned into a close contest that locked both squads at 12-12. The Orange and Black were able to gradually build a lead at 14-13 that they would not surrender the remainder of the set. A 5-2 run closed out the set to put the visitors back into the match at 2-1 with the 25-20 win.
Cornerstone was quick to respond in frame four, jumping ahead 9-0 before the Warriors gradually begin to answer. A strong final push from the hosts though put Tech out of contention for a comeback, as they would drop the fourth set 25-13 and the match 3-1.
Madison Park led the Warriors with 22 assists, while
Madeline MacDonald recorded 22 digs and
Olivia Niekamp registered 10 kills.
The Orange and Black (10-3, 2-1 WHAC) continue their Grand Rapids road trip with a Saturday afternoon contest against Aquinas College at 1 p.m. from Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
