WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Warriors faced off against the number five and number seven nationally ranked teams today at the Patriot Duals hosted by the University of the Cumberlands.
Tech took on No. 5 Life University in their first match of the day.
Jaden Johnson opened the match at 101 against Unity Cordova.
Johnson lost to Cordova via tech fall (10-0) which gave Life a 4-0 lead in the team score. Next up for the Warriors was
Tehani Soares against Katalina Bartelt who was recently ranked just above
Soares in the national rankings at tenth.
Soares and Bartelt battled until the end when eventually Bartelt came out on top in a 9-8 win to earn three points for the Running Eagles while
Soares earned one point for Tech to make the team score 7-1.
Korigan Wilkey competed at 116 for the Warriors against Peyton Prussin who was recently ranked first in the nation at 116.
Wilkey battled for three minutes before Prussin won via tech fall (11-0) to earn four more points for the Running Eagles.
Korissa VanOver represented for Tech at 123 against number three in the nation Julia Vidallon. Vidallon won 11-0 an earned four more points to take the Running Eagles lead to 15-1. Riley Dalrymple (No. 11) defeated
Charmayne DeLong via fall to add five more points to the Running Eagles' score.
Elly Kuzma competed at 136 against Brianna Kellin and won the match via tech fall (11-0) to score four points for the Warriors and make the score 20-5.
Samantha Snow fell at 143 to Hailey Finn (No. 11) via fall followed by
Glenda Veiga being defeated at 155 for the Running Eagles to take a 29-5 lead. The Warriors forfeited the 170-weight class and
Catherine McNulty fell at 191 via fall for Life to win the match 39-5.
The Warriors then went on to face No. 7 University of the Cumberlands.
Johnson wrestled at 101 again and fell via pin for the Patriots to take an early 5-0 lead.
Soares pinned Olivia Coyne in 5:02 to tie the match at 5-5.
Wilkey continued the success with a tech fall victory (10-0) in two minutes to give the Warriors their first lead of the day (9-5).
VanOver defeated Dorinda Andrews 12-0 in just over four minutes to extend their lead to eight (13-5).
Charmayne DeLong pinned Lena Taylor in 1:25 for five more points to the Warriors to lead the Patriots 18-5.
Kuzma, Snow and
Veiga were all beaten via fall to each give up five points apiece to the Patriots for Cumberlands to take a 20-18 lead. The Warriors forfeited at 170 and the Patriots forfeited 191 to give each team five points. The Patriots barely defeated the Warriors 25-23.
After both duals, Tech went into individual matches.
Destiny Shelton competed in four matches at 109 while
Riley Horvath also competed in four matches and went 2-2 on the day.
Wilkey ended her day of competition at 116 with a victory over Kaelynn Doughetry via fall in 1:49.
VanOver earned another win by pinning Andrews in 1:34 at 123.
Sydney Lewis made an appearance at 130 with four matches going 1-3. She defeated Vanessa Nebre of Cumberlands 10-0.
Kuzma wrestled three more times at 136.
Kuzma defeated Carson Carter of Cumberlands 10-0 and Emily Alderman of Cumberlands via fall in 3:55 to end the individual matches 2-1.
Veiga gained four more matches and went 2-2 defeating Kailee Godinez (17-6) and Madyson Dow (fall 3:43) both from the University of the Cumberlands.
The Warriors are back on the mat on December 12
th when they play host to Life for their first Mid-South Conference match and their first home match.
