Tech Smashes Saints in WHAC Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech men's tennis team defeated Aquinas College, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) opener inside MVP Sportsplex.

"Our men started fast in doubles today," said head coach Brock Orlowski. "That proved to be a huge momentum builder for the rest of the match. We got a lot of support and good play throughout our lineup and showed our team depth by getting big wins at the bottom of the lineup. It was a great overall team win and a hard-fought match in our first conference dual of the year."

The Warriors swept through doubles play to pick up the point, with the second flight of Tiago Neves and Brunno Storani winning 6-1, while the first (Alvaro Garrido/Alvaro Gomez) and third flight (Raybin Chan/Jafer Infante) winning 6-4.

The Saints took the first two matches of singles play to go up 1-0, but Tech took the final four matches to come out of Grand Rapids with the victory. Juan Avellaneda won 6-0, 6-2 at fourth position while Chan picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at number five singles. Garrido battled back from first-set loss to win 6-4 (4), 7-5, 7-5 to clinch the match for the Orange and Black while Infante won 6-1, 6-1 at six singles.

Tech (8-3, 1-0 WHAC) returns to action on Sunday, March 8 as they start off their Spring Break trip with a visit to NCAA Division I University of Dayton. First serve is set for 3 p.m. from the South Regency Tennis and Fitness Center in Miamisburg, Ohio.
