WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Women's wrestling battles against No. 7 University of the Cumberlands and led 22-20 only to fall 25-20 in the end.
Whitley Blake was the first on the mat for Tech at 101 against Elizabeth Dosado.
Blake went down 2-0 but defended the next shot by Dosado and reversed it to tie the match at 2-2. Dosado led 6-2 after the first period and ultimately won via tech fall (12-2) to earn the Patriots four points while
Blake earned Tech one.
Tehani Soares was the representative for Tech at 109 against Olivia Coyne.
Soares scored the first two points of the match and continued her momentum with three more takedowns, one just seconds before time ran out in the first, to lead 8-0 after the first period. In the first 20 seconds of the second period
Soares earned another takedown and won the match 10-0 to get four points for the Warriors. The Warriors now led 5-4.
Korigan Wilkey wrestled Jaine Stephens at 116. Stephens came out firing and took a 6-1 lead before
Wilkey was able to get two points and cut the lead to three (6-3). Stephens continued being the aggressor and eventually won via fall to gain five points for the Patriots and put them back ahead 9-5.
Korissa VanOver earned a forfeit victory to put the Warriors back ahead 10-9. At 130,
Charmayne DeLong faced Emily Alderman. Alderman scored two quickly to go ahead 2-0 before
DeLong responded with two of her own to tie the match at 2-2 to end the period.
DeLong opened the second period strong and got an early two points to lead 4-2. In a tie up, both athletes earned two points for
DeLong to still hold a 6-4 lead before scoring four more points before the period ended to win via decision 10-4 to gain three more points for the Warriors to lead 13-10.
Sydney Lewis lost via tech fall at 136 followed by
Alexandra Mireles losing via fall to put the Patriots back ahead 19-13.
Samantha Snow wrestled up at 155 to face Kailee Godinez.
Snow had two quick takedowns and a turn to score six points while Godinez countered to earn two points herself.
Snow led 6-2 and became the true aggressor and scored six straight points to go ahead 12-2 before Godinez could get anymore points.
Snow earned a four-point takedown in the final seconds to win 16-4 and get Tech within three (20-17).
Catherine McNulty was next on the mat for the Warriors at 170 to face Hailey Budney.
McNulty went down 2-0 before stealing the momentum and getting a takedown.
McNulty got Budney on her back and earned a pin to put the Warriors ahead 22-20 heading into the final weight class. Unfortunately, the Warriors had to forfeit the 191-weight class and lost the battle 25-22.
Head Coach
Paul Rademacher had this to say about the match; "If just a couple small things went our way, we would win that dual. We have little adjustments to make still and we will be really close to a big breakthrough. Freshmen have ups and downs and learn little things in events like this so I'm excited to see how it goes as we continue this process."
The Warriors return back home on January 23
rd when they host Mid-South Conference opponent Brewton-Parker.
