FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's volleyball team split of a pair of five-set matches over the weekend, falling to Madonna Friday night (25-20, 25-22, 26-28, 21-25, 10-15) before outlasting the University of Michigan-Dearborn Saturday afternoon (25-19, 22-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-8) to pick up a win on Senior Day and give 10
th year head coach
Kourtney Wilson her 200
th career win. Wilson already holds the record for most wins at Indiana Tech.
Emma Westra had 15 kills and six digs on Friday against Madonna while
Noelle VanOort had 14 kills and 16 digs.
Madelyn Omo recorded nine kills and six blocks to go along with a .438 hitting percentage while Kelsey Schladenbrand had 30 assists.
Jacey Blust recorded a season-best 30 digs.
The Warriors got out to a 2-0 lead over their rivals as they looked to sweep the Crusaders for the second time this year and attempted to sweep the season series for the first time since 2009. Trialing 23-21 in the third, the Warriors took advantage of a pair of Madonna errors to get to match point, but couldn't put the visitors away as the Crusaders battled back from another match point to force overtime before coming out with the 28-26 win.
The two sides were neck and neck throughout the early going in the fourth until a 5-0 spurt from Madonna put them ahead 18-16. Tech battled back to tie it up at 20, but the visitors rattled off four straight points en route to tying the match up at two sets apiece. The Crusaders raced ahead in the fifth with a 5-0 run that was a part of an 8-1 start to the deciding set and the Warriors couldn't recover as Madonna came away with the come-from-behind 3-2 victory.
Westra led the Warrior offense again Saturday against UM-Dearborn with 14 kills to go along with six blocks.
Taylor Paul also notched 14 kills while Omo hit .438 with eight kills and two blocks. Schladenbrand had 23 assists while
Andrea Schriver dished out 20 of her own. Blust notched 26 digs while
Katrina Reynolds recorded a career-best 22.
The Warriors battled with the Wolverines all afternoon long with 19 ties and nine lead changes over the course of the match. After taking the opening set, Tech fell behind 15-11 following a 6-0 run, but came back to tie it up at 15. UM-Dearborn would not be denied though, closing the set out on an 8-3 run to tie it up a 1-1.
Tech battled through a furious comeback attempt from the Wolverines in the third set to go up 2-1, only to see the Wolverines get up 19-13 in the fourth. The Warriors came storming back with a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to 22-20, but couldn't complete the comeback as they went to a fifth set for the second time over the weekend. The Orange and Black wasted no time grabbing the momentum with a 10-4 start and the visitors couldn't recover as Tech swept the season series and won their 28
th straight match against the Wolverines.
Tech (22-12, 14-5 WHAC) sits a game and a half behind Cornerstone for second place in the conference standings and wraps up the regular season Saturday with a trip to Siena Heights. First serve is set for 5 p.m. from the SHU Fieldhouse.
