FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich./FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The No. 12-ranked Indiana Tech men's hockey team put on an impressive showing this weekend, sweeping yet another top WHAC foe, this time it was the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils.
On Friday night the Warriors traveled to Farmington Hills, Michigan to take on the 20th ranked Blue Devils for the first time this season.
It would take nearly 15 minutes for either team to find the back of the net, but it was Lawrence Tech that would break the seal. The senior
Matej Krasny would respond with a shorthanded goal before the first intermission off of an assist from
Cam Chabot.
LTU would get ahead once again off of a power-play goal midway through the second period. The Warriors would once again tie the game up going into the intermission, this time it was
Colton Nikiforuk scoring off of the assist from
Brandon Plummer.
It was all even going into the final period, and then the junior from Fort Wayne did his thing,
Cole Barney, would poke check the puck away from the Blue Devils, and score on a one-on-one wrister to put the Warriors ahead, 3-2.
LTU would respond with a power-play goal just over one minute later though, knotting the game up yet again.
To nobody's surprise,
Joel Holmberg had the ice in his veins, scoring on a wrist-shot after
Malik Ali gave him the pass with just over five minutes to play, sealing the fate of the Blue Devils, and winning the game 4-3.
On Saturday night the series would head back to Fort Wayne, with the Blue Devils posting a very impressive 7-0 record on the road. Indiana Tech knew they had to take their energy to another level if they wanted to shut down that LTU streak.
And did they ever!
The Warriors crushed the Blue Devils, 7-1.
Colton Nikiforuk earned the start and the hat-trick.
Joel Holmberg netted two goals himself, with
Cam Chabot and
Alex Potter each scoring in the third period.
Braedyn Funke would have 13 saves on the night.
Tech improves to 11-2 on the season, 9-1 in WHAC play, and increase their winning streak to six. Next Friday they will head to Howell, Michigan to take on Cleary (3-13, 2-10 WHAC) before heading back to Fort Wayne for the second game of the series on Saturday, December 4th, at 5:30 PM at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse.
