JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Women's wrestling notches two All-Americans and a 14
th-place finish at their first NAIA Women's Wrestling Invitational this past weekend.
The Warriors earned 14
th with a total of 54.5 points. This is the highest finish by a first-year program ever in NAIA history while Tech also earned their first two All-Americans in program history with
Tehani Soares and
Sam Snow.
Soares wrestled at 109 for the Warriors and was seeded fourth in her bracket. She opened the day against Alessia Cokeley of Ottawa and won via pin in just 1:36 for her first victory at nationals. She then moved on the face Lilianna Campbell of Missouri Valley. After going down 3-0,
Soares rebounded and scored two before the first period ended to only be down 3-2. She came out strong in the second period scoring four points within the first minute. She scored another two with under 30 seconds left to win the match 8-4 and advance to the next round. In her next match,
Soares faced conference rival Jaine Stephens of Cumberlands.
Soares scored the first takedown to lead 2-0 before Stephens tied it up.
Soares scored another takedown with just 30 seconds left in the first period to lead 4-2 at the end of one. Stephens opened the second period with a takedown about halfway through to tie the match 4-4. With just 50 seconds on the clock
Soares earned a four-point takedown to win the match 8-4 and move on to the semifinals. With her win over Stephens,
Soares was guaranteed to become the first All-American in Indiana Tech history.
Soares semifinals match was against McKayla Campbell of Campbellsville, another Mid-South Conference opponent. Campbell gained control early leaded 8-0 after the first and won within the first minute of the second period 10-0 for
Soares to be bumped to the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semis,
Soares challenged Emma Cochran of Grand View.
Soares dominated the match with three two-point takedowns and one four-point takedown to win the match 10-2 and move on into the third-place match.
Soares lost the third-place match and finished fourth in her first NAIA Women's Wrestling Invitational appearance.
Snow wrestled at 143 for Tech and was seeded fourth. Her first match was against conference rival Kailee Godinez of Cumberlands who she had beaten twice earlier this year.
Snow was aggressive from the start and led 8-0 before Godinez got on the board.
Snow finished the match with 1:02 left on the clock when her final takedown solidified the 12-2 tech fall victory.
Snow then advanced to face Joylynn Wegman of William Penn who was unseeded in the bracket.
Snow won quickly with an 11-0 tech fall in just 2:08 to move on to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals,
Snow wrestled Jordan Suarez of Wayland Baptist who was ranked fifth. Suarez took control early and won 10-0 to send
Snow to the consolation bracket. In her first consolation match,
Snow wrestled Makia English of St. Mary. After going down 1-0,
Snow responded with a four-point takedown and just kept scoring points from there to lead 10-1 after the first period. She scored within the first 30 seconds of the first period to win 12-1 and move on to the next round.
Snow then moved on to challenge Nancy Becerra of Missouri Valley and won with a 13-0 tech fall.
Snow's next match was against Sydney Freund of Oklahoma City.
Snow scored the only point in the first period to lead 1-0 with a pushout before notching another at the start of the second period to lead 2-0. Freund had a four-point takedown only for
Snow to respond with one herself with just 25 seconds left in the match. Another two points for
Snow before the match ended gave her the 8-4 victory to move on to the third-place match.
Snow fell in her final match 11-8 to Emma Walker of Campbellsville to finish fourth and become the second All-American in Indiana Tech women's wrestling history.
The Warriors had a total of 12 wrestlers at the invitational to make Indiana Tech history.
