FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Baseball drops both games in WHAC Tournament opening round.
In the first game for the Warriors, the Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead as the home team in the bottom of the first inning. Shortly after the game went into a five-hour rain delay. After the delay, the Wolverines came out with runners on second and third with one out and were able to score another run before the end of the inning to lead 2-0.
In the top of the third the Warriors offense came alive when
Reese Olden doubled to right field. The Wolverines notched their first out of the inning before an error allowed
Jake Ritson to reach first. The second out was made by UM-Dearborn before
Spsnser McGhee stepped up to the plate to hit a deep ball over the right centerfield fence and score three for the Warriors to take the 3-2 lead before the end of the inning.
In the top of the fifth Tech struck again.
Ritson walked before
Yeshua Saint bunted for a hit to put runners on first and second with no outs. The Wolverines notched two outs, but the Warriors moved runners to second and third. A wild pitch scored
Ritson and put Tech in the lead 4-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Wolverines hit a three-run homer to take a 5-4 lead. This lead would hold, and UM-Dearborn won the first game 5-4.
Zach Zaborowski took the loss on the mound with 6.2 innings pitched with four strikeouts.
Saint went 2-for-2 at the plate while
McGhee went 1-for-3 with one run and three RBIs.
In the second game, the Warriors were home against Madonna. The Crusaders had a strong top of the first inning scoring five runs with a three-run homer followed by a solo home run to lead the Warriors 5-0.
In the bottom of the second inning the Warriors' bats came alive starting with a single by
Mike Snyder.
Manuel Ascanio then hit a deep double to right centerfield that hit the fence and scored
Snyder from first to put Tech on the board.
Jacob Daftari then hit a single to left field to put runners on first and second with no outs. The Warriors took advantage of two passed balls to score and put
Daftari at third while Madonna tallied an out.
Jacob Alvidrez grounded out to third, but it scored
Daftari from third for the Warriors to get back within two (5-3) after the second inning.
Madonna scored one more in the top of the sixth to extend their lead 6-3. Tech attempted a rally in the bottom of the eighth when
Daftari put a ball in play to score
McGhee from second and put the Warriors back within two (6-4). Tech was unable to get any more offense going and dropped the second game 6-4 and be eliminated from the WHAC Tournament.
Charles Dunavan took the loss on the mound pitching six innings with nine strikeouts.
Snyder led the Warriors going 2-for-4 at the plate with one run.
The Warriors will now await their NAIA National Tournament seeding.
