FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Indiana Tech dropped a 2-1 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference result to Cornerstone University on Saturday at Tech Field. The hosts got on the board first through
Olivia Sherman in the 24th minute, but two goals from CU within five minutes on either side of halftime propelled the Golden Eagles to the comeback win.
Sherman's goal developed from a well-worked corner-kick delivery.
Savannah Simmers starter the play with a driven ball to
AnnaBella Kowalczyk in the middle of the penalty area on the set piece. Kowalczyk cleverly nodded the ball on to Simmers, who calmly finished a side-footed effort with her left boot to push the Warriors to a 1-0 lead.
Tech looked to be heading toward the interval with the lead, until CU substitute Kailey Dodge set up Skylar Scholten for a shot from distance on 41:00. Tech goalkeeper
Michaela Bitle got a hand on the driven shot, but not enough to keep it from trickling across the line.
The Golden Eagles took its momentum back out on the field after halftime and scored the game-winner just 1:40 in to the second stanza. Jada VanTol started the play, stepping up to intercept a Tech pass near midfield and then slotting ball on to the diagonal run of Amber Nicholson. The charging forward collected the pass and pulled a low drive back across Bitle's goal toward the far post and into the net for a 2-1 Golden Eagle advantage that would hold up over the final 43+ minutes.Â
CU held a 16-8 edge in shots, which Tech earned seven corners to Cornerstone's three. Bitle completed 90 minutes with seven saves. Her CU counterpart Hope Steenwyk made two saves. The loss drops Tech to 3-5-3 on the season, 1-2-2 in league play. CU improved to 5-4-2 and 2-2-1 in the WHAC.
Tech completes a two-game homestand in conference play with a 7 PM start versus Lourdes University next Wednesday, Oct. 12.
