FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 17-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team took down Concordia in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Semifinals in easy fashion after blowing past Madonna in the WHAC Quarterfinals. With this win, Tech is set to host the conference championship against Rochester Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
Kyra Whitaker had a game high 25 points on a stellar 7-11 from three and 9-13 from the floor.
Emma Tuominen did a little bit of everything, notching 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists good for her ninth double double of the season.
Erika Foy also had herself a double double after having 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Taya Andrews rounded out the double digit scoring for the Warriors with 12.
The first quarter was the
Kyra Whitaker show as she went 3-5 from deep scoring nine of her team's 19 points. The Warriors got out to an early 11-0 lead over the visitors and never looked back as there were no lead changes or ties throughout the contest. The Cardinals finally got on the board at the 4:25 mark but once again Whitaker would answer with two three balls on the assist from
Bethany Worm and Tuominen before Tuominen did a little scoring of her own by knocking down a layup in the paint to finish off the period.
Concordia was the first to get things going in the second, but it would not be long before Whitaker hit a three yet again. After Whitaker's three, the Warriors went on a 7-0 run before the Cardinals answered by knocking down a jumper in the paint. Tuominnen's fast break layup would be the last bucket for the next minute before a smooth jumper in the paint by Andrews got the Orange and black cruising again.
After the break, Tech continued to run away from their opponent outscoring the Cardinals 30-17 in third quarter. Andrews scored the first four points of the period for the Warriors and did not let their guests score until the 7:42 mark, increasing their advantage 41-20. Whitaker and Tuominen got things rolling for Tech, combining for 18 of their team's 30 third quarter points. The pair went on to score the last 12 points of the period with Whitaker making the play of night when she knocked down a long triple at the buzzer.
The fourth quarter went back and forth more with the Cardinals outscoring the Warriors 21-20. However, Tech's lead was no match for the visitors to climb their way back. Foy led the way for the Warriors in the final period going 3-4 from the free throw line and knocking down a nice jumper in lane. Worm and
Laney Steckler both came off the bench and hit a three to grow their lead even more, 84-48.
The Warriors defense proved to be strong suit once again, only allowing their opponents to knock down 21-56 (37.5%) from the field and 4-18 (22.2%) from three. As for the hosts, they were hot, going 31-53 (58.5%) from the field and 9-20 (45%) from deep, with Whitaker having seven of the nine made threes.
