DAYTON, Tenn. – The No. 17 – ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team fell short Saturday in a battle with the University of Pikeville, 51-44. The loss knocks the Warriors out of the NAIA Tournament and ends their season 30-3, WHAC 19-1.
Taya Andrews led the way for the Warriors with a game high 15 points on 6-14 shooting to go along with five assists, four rebounds, and a block.
Erika Foy was the only other double-digit scorer with 13 and adding in four rebounds.
Emma Tuominen chipped in eight points and four rebounds while
Kyra Whitaker had five points, a team high six rebounds, and two assists.
Both teams seemed to struggle offensively as it was a low scoring game. Both teams shot under 40% from the field and under 10% from three. Tech shot a game high 37% from the floor and 7.1% from three, yet it did not matter as the free throws favored the Bears, making 17 of their 20 and Tech only making 9 of their 17.
Tech got off to a pretty good start with Foy getting the first basket of game on a good layup in the paint before Pikeville came back with a good jumper to make things even. The two teams traded points back and forth the remainder of the quarter until a basket by the Bears with 40 seconds left gave them the 12-10 advantage. The second quarter was scoreless until the 8:46 mark when Pikeville scored on a three-point play to take the five-point lead, 15-10. The Bears went on a 4-0 run late into the period before Whitaker would knock down a pair of freebies and Andrews got a nice fastbreak layup to give the Warriors some momentum. However, Pikeville would go into the locker room at the break with a nine-point advantage, 27-18.
The Warriors seemed to have things going in their favor, outscoring their opponents 14-8 in the third quarter. Andrews and Tuominen got things rolling for their team combining for 12 of their team's 14 points. After a strong showing in the third quarter, the Warriors were within three. The Warriors carried the momentum over into the final period with an old fashion three-point play by Foy and an Andrews layup to make things even at 37. Tech struggled to find the inside of the basket until Tuominen knocked down one of two free throws at the 3:41 mark to make the score 38-41. The teams traded points yet again, but Pikeville outlasted the Warriors by knocking down their free throws down the stretch.
