FORT WAYNE – The Indiana Tech women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought battle Saturday afternoon in their home opener to No. 9- ranked Siena Heights, 11-16, to start conference play.
Faith Donally had four goals and two draw controls on the day while
Abby Barkdull added three goals to go along with 2 assists, good for five points.
Brooke Buhr did a little bit of everything, picking up two goals, two assists, two groundballs, and seven draw controls.
Abbey Wilson and
Madi Jarvis also scored for the Warriors with Wilson also having two groundballs and four draw controls.
Sydney Oberdorfer was in the cage for Tech, picking up six saves.
The Warriors were the first to strike behind the efforts of Jarvis, but it was not long before the Saints answered back with a goal of their own at the 12:27 mark. With things even at one, neither team scored for the next seven minutes until Buhr got Tech rolling. Once again, Siena responded with a goal about two minutes later to tie things up at 2-2. The Saints second goal of the quarter propelled them to take the 4-2 lead as they went on to score two more goals in the remaining 3:54 of the quarter.
Donally got things started for Tech in the second quarter, scoring off the assist from Buhr. However, not even 30 seconds later the visitors answered back to take back their two-point lead. Buhr notched her second goal of the day before the Saints scored two straight to take the 7-4 lead. The Orange and Black were able to hold the guests to one more goal in the quarter and pick up three more of their own with the help of Barkdull and Wilson, scoring two and one a piece. The second quarter was a scoring frenzy for both teams, as the two teams combined for a total of nine goals with the hosts outscoring the visiting Saints 5-4 to cut the lead to within one.
Tech was unable to find the goal in the third quarter with the Saints picking up four more goals to take the 12-7. The start of the final quarter seemed to hint at a possible comeback by the Warriors after scoring three quick goals in the span of 40 seconds to start the quarter with the help of Barkdull and Donally who scored at the 13:50, 13:29, and 13:10 mark. With the Orange and Black down by only two, the Saints responded with three straight goals to take the 15-10 advantage. Donally was able to score one more goal for the Warriors, but the comeback would fall short as the Saints were able to hold on.
Indiana Tech (1-2, WHAC 0-1) is back in action Wednesday as they travel to Grand Rapids to face WHAC opponent Aquinas for a 5 p.m. start.
