Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Warriors Outlast Lourdes to Claim WHAC Title

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 4-ranked Indiana Tech men's volleyball team continued its historic season with a 3-2 (25-23, 25-27, 25-16, 22-25, 15-12) victory over No. 10-ranked Lourdes University Wednesday evening inside the Schaefer Center to win the regular season Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) championships in the program's third season after being revived in 2020. Tech extended its winning streak to 11 matches and will host the WHAC Tournament next weekend.

Mason Milan had a team-best 15 kills, 10 digs, four blocks and three service aces while Daynte Stewart had 14 kills, six digs and six blocks. Dante Siracusa and Raekwon Rogers had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while adding three and five blocks. Brandon Jones dished out 49 assists while Joey Hermes recorded 22 digs. Chase Christiansen had nine blocks, including the match-winner.

It was only fitting that the programs first outright regular season conference title would have be taken from the two-time defending champion Gray Wolves, who shared the crown with the Warriors last season and won the only other regular season WHAC title in 2019 (the 2020 season was cut short due to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic). The first set alone featured 15 ties and six lead changes, with a kill from Siracusa and a block from Siracusa and Christiansen gave the hosts the final two points of the set to go up 1-0.

The second set featured 12 ties and eight lead changes as the battle between the two top teams in the WHAC raged on. A 3-0 lead from the Warriors put them up 16-12, but a 6-1 run from the Gray Wolves knotted the set up at 18. After trading points over the next six serves, the visitors appeared to get the upper hand at 22-21, only to see Tech battle back to go up 23-22. Lourdes rattled off the next two points, but the Warriors fought off set point and used a kill from Rogers and a block by Rogers and Stewart to make it 25-24, but the Gray Wolves won the next three points, with Jeff Lam recording one of his match-high 23 kills to tie the match up at 1-1.

The Warriors controlled the third set from the start thanks to a 12-4 run to kick things off and never looked back, leading by as many as 10 to retake the match lead at 2-1.

The Gray Wolves rallied back with a 6-0 run in the fourth to go up 9-7 and never let go of the lead. Tech did put a scare into the visitors as they fought off two set points, but Lourdes got a kill from Eduardo Ayala to send it to a fifth set.

The two sides went back-and-forth in the pressure-packed gym, with Lourdes holding the lead until a 3-0 run put the Warriors up 9-8. The Gray Wolves retook the lead for a moment at 10-9, but a kill and ace from Milan along with a block from Rogers and Jones pushed Tech ahead 12-10. The Warriors held on to the lead and finished off the match with a kill from Mario Capo and a final block from Christiansen to complete the victory.

Tech (25-1, 12-1 WHAC) wraps up conference play Friday as they host Lawrence Tech. First serve is set for 7 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
