Webster-Freeman, Voyles Highlight Another Record Breaking Day at GVSU

ALLENDALE, Mich. --  Grand Valley's State's Big Meet lived up to its name on Friday as big performances were the name of the game for Indiana Tech track and field athletes.  Juanita Webster-Freeman and Lisa Voyles continued their record breaking campaigns with impressive marks while a host of other Warriors solidified their national qualifying status heading into the season's final stages.

Webster-Freeman had been flirting with the 14-meter mark in the shot put all season before an amazing throw on Friday that saw her shoot past that barrier on her way to a school record, a personal best, and a national #1 mark.  Her mark of 14.97m bested the previous Indiana Tech record by over a meter (13.93m) and moves her to the top spot in the NAIA by .63m.  She continued her night with several other throws well beyond 14 meters.

Voyles, who broke her own indoor 800m mark only six days prior, did it again, running 2:08.21 to not only top her indoor standard, but also her outdoor school record.  The reigning outdoor national champion ranks 2nd in the nation in the event.

Additional Big Meet highlights:
  • Katlyn Jones moved to the #2 all-time spot in the 60 hurdles at 8.48.  Webster-Freeman also PR'd and moved to the #5 spot in 8.67.
  • Krista Boese jumped to #4 all-time in the 3000m in 10:00.71.
  • Isaac Sytsma ran the 2nd fastest indoor mile in school history at 4:15.42.  The school record is 4:15.20.
  • Soyinne Grenyion recorded a personal best in the 60m at 7.56.
  • Jo'Deci Irby ran 1:33.94 for 600 meters to move into the #4 spot on the all-time list.  Olaide Olapade also secured a "B" mark in 1:37.13.
  • Braden Crosby picked up his "B" in the 400m in 49.13.
  • Esau Haynes moved to within .01 of the Tech top ten list in the 60m with a mark of 6.78.
  • Jamaya Warthen had a huge PR in the 200m at 24.74.
In addition to those competing at the Big Meet, a group of jumpers and vaulters competed nearby at Aquinas in the WHAC vs MIAA Challenge.
