KANSAS CITY, Mo – Indiana Tech rises from the ashes and completes a spectacular 16-point comeback to beat Georgetown College 80-71 to reach the NAIA Championship Final for the first time in school history. The Warriors' 32nd win of the season (new school record) on Friday night is one more chapter in a historical season for Indiana Tech.
If the Warriors were making history, there was no better way to do that. In a game that had a movie script, Indiana Tech started getting hit hard by Georgetown in a first half that looked like a nightmare for the Warriors. With 8 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, Indiana Tech saw Georgetown build a 16-point lead with 7:36 left while committing 0 turnovers.
The Warriors started the climb back and managed to cut this advantage to 11 points, arriving at halftime, losing 40-29.
The Warriors stole Georgetown's momentum from the first minute in the second half. With 16:21 left on the clock and 46-35 on the score,
Grant Smith scored 2 free throws to cut Georgetown's advantage to single digits and started a 15-4 run for the Warriors that would culminate in both teams tied at 50 points after
Max Perez hit a 3-point shot.
Only 30 seconds later, the Warriors took the lead in the game for the first time. Something that would not change throughout the end of the match, with Indiana Tech players being cold in the clutch moments to pick the best shot and convert the free throws when necessary.
Josh Kline controlled the paint on both sides of the court one more time, scoring 15 points and grabbing 8 rebounds while being 3/3 from the free-throw line. An inspired
Grant Smith that distributed beautiful passes and fought for every ball, finished the game with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal.
Steve Helm was the heart of the team during the comeback run. His energy ignited the team every time he was on the court. Helm finished the game with 12 points (10 in the second half), 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and one steal.
In a match where the Warriors lost the first half by 11 points and won the second half by 20 points, this team could show the strength of a collective team that is ready to overcome adversities to keep making history.
The NAIA Championship Final is the next and final chapter of Indiana Tech's fairytale season. Saturday (March 17), against the No. 1 ranked team in the country, The College of Idaho, at 7 p.m. (CT) in Kansas City, Missouri.
