Warriors Fall to LTU on Last-Second Shot

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – After a delayed start due to travel issues, the 4th-seeded Indiana Tech men's basketball team fell 65-66 on a last-second shot to the 5th-seeded Lawrence Tech Blue Devils in the WHAC Tournament Quarterfinal on Thursday evening in the Schaefer Center.

It was an action-packed opening twenty minutes with the two squads going toe-to-toe, unable to establish any advantage, resulting in six lead changes and five ties. Both teams held a six-point lead in the back-and-forth affair but couldn't stretch the advantage past that point. The Warrior's defense was a strong point through the opening 15 minutes, holding LTU's leading scorer, Brandon Beavers, to 0 first-half points, which helped as Tech maintained a lead for the majority of the opening 20 minutes. Still, Beavers' entourage, led by Aaron Donly's ten first-half points, took charge of a Blue Devil 10-4 run in the final four and a half minutes of the half that saw the visitors take a 36-32 lead into the midway break.

Out of the break, the Warriors started strong, opening on a 5-0 run to retake the lead for the first time since the 4:16 mark in the first half. Similarly to the first half, neither team would budge an inch, trading buckets on seemingly every possession. The second featured three fewer ties than the first but had ten lead changes as neither team could stretch their lead past four points. The visitors held the lead for most of the second half, but hitting both ends of the one-and-one, Steve Helm momentarily grabbed the lead with under three minutes to play. After a Lawrence Tech triple-tied the game with 53 seconds left, a weak side tip-in from Lucas Lyyski gave the hosts a two-point advantage with 17 seconds left. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Cameron McEvans hit a toughly contested three with 1.9 seconds left on the clock that would lift the Blue Devils past the Warriors.

Lucas Lyyski was one board short of a double-double with 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Steve Helm posted 12 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist. Crew Gibson contributed 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists off the bench.

With tonight's loss, Tech's season comes to a close, finishing the campaign with an 18-11 record overall and a 16-6 record in the conference.
