SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Indiana Tech softball team traveled to Sylvania, Ohio, on Wednesday for the opening day of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament at Pacesetter Park. The Warriors faced Concordia University in their first game, falling 1-4, moving to the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament. Tech faced the Cleary Cougars in game two, coming up short 8-10 to fall out of the tournament.
In game one, the Cardinals got on the board first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning after holding the Warriors scoreless in the top half. The second inning was scoreless for both sides, but the Cardinals doubled their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the third.
Grace Butcher got Tech on the board with a single down the right-field line to score
Kenadee Schnick in the fourth inning. The Cardinals shut down Tech's offense through the next three innings to hold on to their 4-1 lead and take game one.
In game two, the Cougars came out firing, jumping to an early lead after plating four runs in the first inning. The Cougar's offense didn't slow down, as they scored one run in the second and two in the third and held the Warriors scoreless to widen the gap between the sides. Tech finally got on the board in the fifth inning as
Kaelie Kugler and
Brooke Hughes each drove in a run. The Cougars responded with three more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 10-2 lead. Tech started a comeback attempt in the sixth, scoring two more runs, and added four more in the seventh but came up short as they fell 8-10.
Brooke Hughes,
Kennedi Sullivan, and
Kaelie Kugler led the Warrior offense. Hughes went two for two with one RBI, Sullivan was three for three with one RBI, and Kugler got two hits in four at-bats and led the side with three RBIs.
Tech finishes the season with a 34-15 overall record while finishing fifth in the WHAC with a 14-8 record.
