WHEELING, W.Va. – The Indiana Tech men's rugby team embarked on a historic journey Saturday, marking their inaugural appearance at the Nail City 7's tournament hosted by Wheeling University. Facing formidable opponents, including the 2024 NCR 7's National Champions Wheeling University, St. Bonaventure, and Marian University, the Warriors showcased resilience and camaraderie throughout the competition.
In their opening match, the Warriors faced the reigning national champions. Despite the challenging start, a standout moment occurred in the second half when sophomore
Ashton Skarie fielded a kickoff, absorbed a brutal tackle, and offloaded the ball to freshman
Emery Crawford. Crawford sprinted 80 meters, evading defenders to secure the first try in Indiana Tech Rugby history.
The Warriors delivered a commendable performance against St. Bonaventure in the second game. Freshman scrumhalf
Noah Allen initiated the scoring for Indiana Tech, powering over the try line to conclude the first half at a 5-14 deficit. The second half witnessed freshman
Max Brinker breaking through for a long try, with
Derek Powell adding the conversion, narrowing the gap to 12-14. Moments later,
Ashton Skarie's determined run and tackle-breaking effort propelled the Warriors into a 17-14 lead. However, a miscommunication on the ensuing kickoff allowed St. Bonaventure to regain the lead. Despite a valiant effort and a near breakaway in the closing moments, the Warriors fell short, concluding the match at 17-21.
The Warriors continued to battle through the day, taking on Marian in their third match before facing Wheeling again in the semifinals. The day concluded with a rematch against St. Bonaventure in the third-place match. Though the Warriors fought hard, experience and execution played a key role in the outcome.
"We knew this tournament would be a learning experience, and that's exactly what we got," said head coach
Sam DiFilippo. "Every program has to start somewhere and today was about laying the foundation. These guys competed, supported each other, and showed flashes of what they're capable of."
With their first tournament behind them, the Warriors are set to compete at the Fighting Irish 7's on March 29th in South Bend, Indiana. They will participate in the Division 1 Club bracket, with pool play against Loyola University and the University of Louisville.
