SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's rugby team continued its inaugural season on Saturday, March 29th, competing in the Fighting Irish 7s, a tournament hosted by the University of Notre Dame.
Indiana Tech kicked off the day with a dominant 29-14 victory over Loyola University Chicago. The victory was fueled by tries from
Andrew Evans,
Ashton Skarie,
Jose Bethel,
Max Brinker, and
Noah Allen, with
Derek Powell adding two conversions. The Warriors displayed strong ball movement and attacking efficiency to start the day on a high note.
The competition stiffened as Indiana Tech faced defending club 7s national champions University of Louisville, struggling to generate offense in a 27-0 loss. Against Grand Valley State University, Evans contributed a try and conversion, but an early deficit proved too much to overcome in a 22-7 defeat.
In the final match against the University of Chicago, Evans again led the scoring effort with a try and conversion, but despite a second-half push, the Warriors fell 21-7. The team finished 1-3 on the day, gaining valuable experience as they continue to develop in their inaugural season.
"We showed great improvement in our attacking structure in our win against Loyola, and it was great to get the first win under our belts," said Head Coach
Sam DiFilippo. "As the day progressed, we faced some seasoned opponents and tough conditions, but our guys battled through and continued to build on what we've been working on. Every game is a learning opportunity, and we're taking those lessons forward."
Indiana Tech Rugby will now focus on its final spring tournament, the Boilermaker 7s at Purdue University on Sunday, April 6th.
