FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team kicked off an action-packed weekend on Friday afternoon by hosting the University of Northwestern Ohio for a WHAC doubleheader. Heading into the contest, the Racers sat atop the conference standings, while the Orange and Black were in third position. Tech took care of business in game one, handing the Racers their first conference loss of the season, winning 4-2. The Racers got their revenge in the night cap, downing the Warriors 3-9.
In game one, both teams plated a run in the first inning, keeping the score level through one. After a scoreless second, the Racers would retake the lead with another one-run inning in the top of the third. The pitchers' battle continued as the game carried on with scoreless fourth and fifth innings. After shutting down the UNOH offense in the top of the sixth, Tech scored the bulk of their runs in the bottom half of the inning. Two swings of the bat was all it took for Tech to take the lead as
Alex Watkins sent a ball off the scoreboard in right center for a two-run home run, which was immediately followed by a shot to left field from
Jaden Miller for back-to-back home runs. After taking the lead in the sixth,
Grant Besser shut the door on the Racers in the seventh, earning the complete game win on the mound. During his outing, Besser allowed two runs on four hits, walked two, and struck out eight of the 31 batters he faced.
The opening inning was a scoreless frame in game two, but the offenses kicked into gear in the second. UNOH plated three runs in the top of the second inning. The Warriors responded with a two-run frame in the bottom half of the second to cut their deficit to one. The Racers extended their advantage back to three runs, leading 5-2 after the third inning. The rest of the visitors' offensive production came in the fifth as they piled on four runs, leading 9-2. After four scoreless innings, the Warriors found the board again in the seventh inning, but ultimately came up short as the Racers took game two 9-3.
The Warriors sit at 22-11 on the season and move to 13-3 in conference play. Up next, the Warriors welcome Madonna University to Fort Wayne on Saturday for another WHAC doubleheader. First pitch against the Crusaders is set for 1:00 p.m.
