FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Indiana Tech is pleased to announce the addition of women's flag football. A national search for a head coach will be held immediately with the focus being on recruiting during the 2026-27 school year in preparation for competition in the spring of 2028. Indiana Tech will now offer 31 varsity programs.
 
"We are thrilled to add women's flag football to our athletic department," Director of Athletics Jessie Biggs said. "The momentum around the sport has been rapidly growing at the NAIA level, and we are excited to bring a nationally thriving sport to Indiana Tech."
 
The NAIA announced on June 17, 2026 that women's flag football had been approved as the NAIA's 30^th championship sport, being elevated from invitational to championship status. The inaugural NAIA Women's Flag Football National Championship will be held in May of 2027. The championship will be a 12-team single elimination tournament.
 
A total of 60 NAIA schools are expected to sponsor women's flag football in the inaugural season as a championship sport with several others joining in the following season, including Indiana Tech. Five NAIA conferences are currently planning to sponsor the sport for 2027: GSAC, Heart, KCAC, SSAC, and the Sun Conference.
 
Women's flag football teams compete 7-on-7 and games consist of four 12-minute quarters. Fields are 80 yards long by 40 yards wide, with the 40-yard mark acting as midfield. Teams have four downs to cross a 20-yard section for a first down with the option to punt on fourth down. After scoring a touchdown, which is six points, teams can run a play for one point from the three-yard line or two points from the ten.
