GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech volleyball took part in their first ever Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference crossover event at Aquinas on Saturday, dropping a pair of matches to No. 13 Davenport and the host Saints. The Warriors (12-11, 7-8 WHAC) took one of four sets from the Panthers (21-5, 13-1 WHAC) in their first match of the day before falling in three to the Saints (14-8, 9-6 WHAC).
Tech opened the day against NAIA No. 13, Davenport and got behind early in the first two sets, struggling to get the offense on track, however, in the third set the Warriors found a rhythm.
After tying the set at 4, Tech used a pair of three point runs to take a 10-5 lead. The "home" team got to within one point, 15-16, but another three point run, highlighted by a
Stacy Nagy kill, gave Tech the 19-15 lead. After taking a 23-19 lead with three kills, one each from
Katelyn St. Martin,
Christine Foest and
Shanice Richards, Davenport reeled off four consecutive points to tie the game at 23. Foest ended the run with a kill and sealed the set win with her fifth point of the game, 25-23.
There were seven ties and two lead changes in the final set, unfortunately for Tech the last tie game at 11. The Warriors won just four of the next 17 points, falling behind 24-15.
Karli Jones served five consecutive points for Tech, with Richards tallying three kills in that span, but it wasn't enough in a 25-20 loss.
Richards had a team-high 12 kills with
Cassandra Sarabia adding nine while Foest and St. Martin finished with eight each. The Warriors totaled 46 kills on 152 attempts, hitting .105.
Jones and
Emileen Palka each collected 19 of the teams 42 assists while
Taylor Kelso led the defense with 19 digs.
Elizabeth Mathews added 11 while St. Martin finished with 10. Nagy added to her solo block record with two.
Aquinas never let the Warriors get comfortable in the second match of the day with Tech leading just once in the three games. The Tech offense struggled, failing to tally double digit kills in any set for the first time this season. Tech tallied 25 total kills on 111 attempts in the match with St. Martin finishing with a team-high seven.
Jones and Palka tallied 12 assists each while Kelso collected 15 digs in the match. St. Martin also had 10 of the teams 44 digs.
The Warriors conclude their three-match road trip on Wednesday, Oct. 22 in Detroit, Mich. as they battle with Marygrove College at 7 p.m.
