FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's soccer team clinched a spot in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament, winning their home finale with a 3-2 victory over Siena Heights at Warrior Athletic Field on Wednesday night.
The Warriors (7-7-2, 4-5 WHAC) were the aggressors early on, but couldn't convert on several scoring opportunities. The Saints (1-13-2, 1-6-2 WHAC) took advantage, converting on their first real scoring threat of the contest to take a 1-0 lead. Tech quickly answered, scoring two minutes later in the 16th minute.
Mitch Smith ran onto a through ball from
Stuart Mitchell, chipping the ball over the goalkeeper's head for the equalizer.
Four minutes later the visitors took the lead again, 2-1, but the Warriors didn't fold. At the 27:29 mark,
Stuart Mitchell got a boot on a rebound, cutting the ball in from a sharp angle, but the Saints defense slipped on the clear, putting the ball in the goal to even the score at 2.
It was a fairly quiet and evenly contested second half; that is until the 84th minute, when
Padraic Ormsby was awarded a free kick and did what he's done in the Warriors last three games, netting a free kick marker. Ormsby took a free kick, this time from 20 yards, clearing the wall and just past the outstretched arm of the Saints keeper for the game-winner.
Tech held a slim 15-11 edge in shots, placing six on frame while SHU tallied just four shots on goal. Ormsby paced the Warriors with four shots while Smith led the team with two on frame.
Logan Kelly earned his first collegiate win in goal for Tech, making two saves in 90 minutes.
Tech returns to the pitch for their season finale on Saturday, Nov. 1 when they travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Cornerstone with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
