FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech volleyball team swept Siena Heights 3-0 Saturday afternoon in their Pink game to benefit the American Cancer Society and the "Making Strides" campaign to end breast cancer.
Tech ended the red-hot Saints' four-game winning streak with three identical 25-19 scores. It was the team's fourth sweep of the season against a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent.
The Orange and Black improved to .500 on the season in both the WHAC and overall (9-9, 5-5 WHAC) by making strides in now taking five of their last six sets starting with their near upset of No. 9 Madonna Friday night. Tech scored the first three points of the first set and took the last three of the third set for the sweep.
In the opening set, the Warriors never relinquished the lead after taking the first three points. In the middle set, Tech tied the game twice after falling behind 1-4 from the start and then took the lead for good at 8-7. The third set went back-and-forth between both teams with each team matching the other 10 times through the first 13 points. Tech broke a 13-13 tie with five-consecutive points and never looked back to end the match.
Shanice Richards and
Stacy Nagy accounted for half of the team's 46 kills, with the former recording a dozen and the latter 11.
Both
Emileen Palka and
Karli Jones accounted for 36 of the team's 40 assists with 18 apiece.
Taylor Kelso and
Katelyn St. Martin co-led the team in digs with 10 each, while
Elizabeth Mathews added seven. St. Martin also had five aces and Nagy added two blocks.
Tech out-hit the Saints in each set and did so convincingly in sets one (.364 to .219) and three (.233 to .081).
The Warriors return to action Wednesday, Oct. 8 when they travel to Dearborn, Mich. to face WHAC foe, University of Michigan-Dearborn at 7 p.m.
