BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Indiana Tech women's basketball team saw four players score in double figures, including a pair of freshman, but it wasn't enough to topple the five-time NAIA scoring leaders in a 136-94 loss on homecoming at McHie Arena on Friday night.
It was a tale of two halves for the Warriors (0-1) who took an early 4-3 lead and after falling behind by eight, used a 15-3 run to take a six point, 21-15 lead seven minutes into the contest. After ONU cut the lead to one, 21-20, the Warriors continued to attack, using a 13-7 run to push the lead to seven, their largest of the game, 34-27 with just under 10 minutes to play in the half. A two minute scoring drought allowed the home team to flip the score, pushing the lead to seven, 41-34 with 7:30 to play in the half.
It looked like the Warriors were going to head into the locker room with a lead after taking a six point advantage, 57-51, with 2:59 left, but the Tigers (1-0) used an 11-4 run to close the half and head to the break up by one, 62-61. Sophomore transfer,
Taylor Seiss, led all scorers with 23 first half points while freshman
Baylee Rinehart tallied 16.
Tech shot 44.2 percent (19-43) from the floor, including a 9-for-18 (50%) mark from the three-point arc. On the other side, ONU finished 23-for-50 (46%) from the floor in the first 20 minutes, hitting 14-of-33 (42.4%) three-point attempts in the half.
After five players tallied double-digit points in the first half, only two managed to post more than 10 in the final 20 minutes. The two teams traded layups to start the half, but a couple of three-pointers pushed the home team ahead by seven and eventually to double-figures. The pace began to wear on the Warriors, who saw six players play at least 17 minutes in the contest, which is more than a single Tiger played. ONU used it's tempo to force some miscues and put the game away.
The Warriors shot just 28.9 percent (11-38) in the second half, going 2-for-14 (14.3%) from behind the arc while the home team shot 41.9 percent (26-62) in the half while connecting on 7-of-31 (22.6%) three-point attempts.
Seiss finished with a team-high 29 points while
Shallante Clements finished with a game-high 12 rebounds. Rinehart recorded a double-double in her collegiate debut, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds while senior
Rayana Villalpando and freshman
Linsey Masnari each added 14 points.
The Warriors return to the court on Thursday, Nov. 6 when they welcome preseason No. 10 Purdue-Calumet to the Schaefer Center for a 7 p.m. tip.
