DETROIT, Mich. – With a trio of scorers netting double-figures, the Indiana Tech women's basketball team dominated their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest against Marygrove with a 65-37 victory at the NW Activities Center on Wednesday night.
The Warriors (5-7, 4-2 WHAC) took control early, leading from the opening tip with an 8-0 run thanks to
Shallante Clements who opened the game 3-for-3 including two free throws to net all eight points for Tech. After a pair of Mustangs (1-8, 0-5 WHAC) layups ended the run, Rayna Villalpando began another, sinking a layup ahead of a pair of treys from
Taylor Seiss for another 8-0 run and a 16-point lead. The home team was able to cut the lead to 10 with a 6-0 run, but didn't get any closer with the Warriors taking a 31-18 lead into the break.
The Orange and Black shot 41.4 percent (12-for-29) in the first half including grabbing 26 rebounds while the defense limited Marygrove to just seven made baskets in the first 20 minutes. It was much of the same in the second half as the Warriors continued to stretch their lead, pushing it to a game-high 29 points, thanks to an 11-0 run, making it 59-30 with 5:25 to play. A
Sarah White free throw with 39 seconds left capped the scoring for the 65-37 win.
Tech finished the contest 21-for-55 (38.2%) from the field, 6-for-20 (30%) from long range and 17-for-26 (65.4%) from the charity stripe. The defense played even better in the second half as the Mustangs finished just 12-for-62 (19.4%) from the field, 5-for-28 (17.9%) from behind the arc and 8-for-14 (57.1%) from the line. Tech outrebounded the home team 60-33 in the contest, outscoring them inside, 24-12 and in second chance points, 12-5.
Seiss finished the contest with a game-high 18 points while
Linsey Masnari recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Clements finished the game with 14 points and seven boards while
Alexjandra Marquez-Lopez was second on the team with nine rebounds.
The Warriors return to action on Saturday, Dec. 6 as they host WHAC foe Lourdes for a 1 p.m. tip in the Schaefer Center.
