@IndianaTechVB Splits Season Opener at Wyndham Classic

WINONA LAKE, Ind. –
The Indiana Tech volleyball team got the 2014 season started on Friday at the Wyndham Classic, defeating IU-Kokomo 3-0 (25-22, 28-26, 25-15) before falling in their second match of the season to Goshen College, 3-2 (15-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-11, 9-11) on the campus of Grace College.

In the first match of the season, Christine Foest led the Warriors with seven kills while three others, Shanice Richards, Katelyn St. Martin and Stacy Nagy each added six. Nagy was the team leader in blocks with seven while Foest and Richards each tallied four.

Freshman setter Karli Jones led the team with 16 assists while Emileen Palka added 11. Taylor Kelso led the defense with 16 digs while Katelyn St. Martin added eight and newcomer Elizabeth Mathews tallied seven.

Tech hit .150 across three games, with their best being game three with a .291 hitting percentage with 10 kills in 23 attempts with just one error.

In their second match of the year, Tech went five games, unable to win the final game of the set. Richards led the Warriors attack with 13 kills with Nagy tallying 11 and Foest adding seven. Nagy led the Warriors at the net with six blocks with Richards adding three.

Jones again had a team-high 22 assists while Palka added 17. On defense, Kelso collected 18 digs with Mathews adding 11 and Janelle Rehlander grabbing seven.

Tech hit .123 in the contest, including a .500 hitting percentage in the fourth set with 10 kills on 20 attempts without an error, winning the game 25-11.

The Orange and Black will conclude play in the Wyndham Classic tomorrow, Aug. 23 with an 11 a.m. contest against host Grace College before facing IU-East at 1:30 p.m.
