Box Score | FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Stacy Nagy tallied four solo blocks to tally 104 in her career, placing her three shy of the Warriors all-time record, but it wasn't enough as Aquinas won the match in five sets at the Schaefer Center on Friday night. The Warriors fall to 6-5, 1-2 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while the Saints improve to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the WHAC.
It was a rollercoaster match on Kline Court that featured 29 ties and 14 lead changes. The Warriors won the second (25-12) and fourth (25-15) games, hitting over .214 in both sets while holding Aquinas to negative hitting percentages in each, however, in the three loses (23-25, 20-25, 13-15), Tech was outhit.
The Saints trailed 13-7 in the first set before winning six straight points to tie the score at 13. After trading three-point runs, the Warriors tied the score again at 22, but Aquinas won three of the next four points for the 1-0 lead.
Tech jumped out to a large lead, 12-4, to begin the second set and never took their foot off the gas, scoring in bunches with a pair of five-point and one six-point run evened the match at 1 with a 25-12 win.
With a 15-13 lead in the third game, the Warriors committed three straight attack errors to give the visitors a 16-15 advantage. Back-to-back kills by the Saints broke a 16-16 tie and propelled AQ to the 25-20 win.
The Warriors trailed for much of the fourth set until a
Christine Foest kill tied the score at 14, sparking a nine point Tech rally to take a 22-14 lead and after a ball handling error by the Warriors gave AQ the serve, the Warriors rattled off three more points to tie the match at 2.
The final set saw six ties with the last coming at 8. A trio of two point rallies by the Saints gave them match point at 14-10, but a kill by
Katelyn St. Martin and a pair of errors by the Saints made it 14-13. The final point came on a Warrior attack the just missed falling inside the backline, giving the visitors a 15-13 win and a 3-2 match victory.
Tech finished the contest with 62 kills on 165 attempts while the Saints tallied just 40 kills on 147 tries. Tech also tallied 70 digs and had 10 total blocks in the match.
Foest led the offense with 19 kills, hitting .302 (19-6-43) on the night while St. Martin added 11 kills and Nagy finished with 10. Setter
Karli Jones was also aggressive at the net, leading the team with a .455 (6-1-11) hitting percentage while also collecting 44 assists.
Taylor Kelso continued to be solid defensively as the sophomore libero tallied 24 digs. St. Martin added 12 digs with Jones amassing 11 and
Elizabeth Mathews also finishing in double figures with 10.
Nagy led the way at the net with four solo blocks and a block assist with
Shanice Richards adding three solo blocks.
The Warriors return to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 17 when they host WHAC foe Marygrove at 7 p.m.
