MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Indiana Tech men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in heartbreaking fashion, falling to Mt. Vernon Nazarene on the road, 3-2 in double overtime.
The game-winner came in the 106th minute after the Warriors (2-1-1) goalkeeper,
Mac Baker, stopped a penalty kick by Preston Spurrier only to see the ball land back at Suprrier's feet for the golden goal.
It was all Cougars (3-3-1) in a scoreless first half as the home team tallied 10 shots to the Warriors four; however, both teams put just one shot on frame. MVNU also amassed eight corner kicks to just two for Tech.
Spurrier was involved in the first goal of the contest, a marker by Tyler Lilly to give the home team the 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. It took just six minutes for the Warriors to answer with a tally of their own off the foot of
Zachary St. Aubin. The junior netted his first marker of the season with an assist from freshman
Andrew Higgins.
The Warriors took their first lead of the contest in the 76th minute when St. Aubin found
Padraic Ormsby who scored his first goal of the year, giving Tech the 2-1 advantage. With just eight minutes to play, the Cougars' Daniel Rodriguez found Gerado Avelar for the equalizer, sending the game to overtime.
Tech dominated the first overtime, tallying four shots to just one for MVNU, but the Cougars' keeper, Jon Gerlach, was up to the task, making a pair of saves.
In the second overtime, the fortunes reversed as the home team tallied four shots to just one for the Orange and Black. Spurrier was tripped in the 18-yard box and awarded a PK which Baker stopped, but it rebounded off the post to Spurrier for the golden goal and the win.
In the game, MVNU tallied 29 shots, putting 12 on frame while the Warriors collected 15 shots and put six on target. The home team also recorded 17 corner kicks to just six for Tech. Baker finished with eight saves in 106:39 while Gerlach tallied four in the contest.
The Warriors return home for a homecoming match against Grace on Saturday, Sept. 20 with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at Warrior Athletic Field.
