Box Score HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's tennis team was down after doubles play, but rallied to take five of six singles matches to defeat Huntington University 6-3 Friday in the team's last match of 2014.
"I couldn't be more proud of the way in which our guys continue to come and prepare themselves everyday," said Tech head coach
Brandt Danals. "That hard work definitely paid off today. Collectively, we still have a lot of work to do to reach our goals. Our entire team, including those who couldn't make the trip with us today, have committed to working together to try to achieve those goals. We'll continue working and hopefully continue to improve as we press on towards our league play."
Tech dropped both sets in first and second doubles against the Foresters, but had the most convincing doubles win at the No. 3 position as
Nicholas Aguirre and
Fernando Sousa won 8-1 against Joe Brenneman and Volodymyr Kohut.
Joaquin Ferrando and
Alberto Tenias bowed 6-8 to Joseph Straznicky and Julian Massa at No. 1 doubles, while
Mikel Oscoz and
Kino de Leon also dropped a close game against Diego Inurritequi and Adrian Beloqui, 7-9.
Tenias won the toughest battle of the day at No. 4 singles winning in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 10-6. Coach Danals commented on Tenias' perseverance, "
Alberto Tenias fought through a cut he sustained early in the second set to come back and win in the super tie-break."
De leon captured the second set 7-6 (7-1) after taking the first 6-4 at No. 5 singles and Ferrando avenged his close doubles loss against Straznicky with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.
"Joaquin played a tremendous match against a high quality opponent, while
Fernando Sousa really came through for us and played excellent in his first match of the year. Nicholas and Kino both provided a huge boost for us winning their matches in straight-sets," added Danals.
Sousa and Aguirre won at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Sousa downed Massa in a pair of 6-3 sets, while Aguirre lost just two games total in a 6-0, 6-2 thumping.
Oscoz rounded out the slate dropping a pair of sets to Inurritequi, 1-6, 3-6 at No. 2 singles.
The men's tennis team next competes against University of Northwestern (Ohio) in Lima, Ohio on March 21.
