LIVONIA, Mich. – The sixth-seeded Indiana Tech women's basketball team traveled to the MU Activities Center to face Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament third seed, Madonna, in the first round of the WHAC tournament on Wednesday, falling 70-56.
With the winner moving on to the semifinals on Saturday, the Crusaders (19-10) got off to a fast start, sinking a pair of three-pointers in their first two possessions to take an early 6-0 lead. Back-to-back jumpers by WHAC Honorable Mention All-Conference performer,
Taylor Carver, cut the deficit to two and
Sarah White followed a Madonna basket with her first points of the game to make it 8-6, but MU scored the next 10 points to go up 12. The Warriors (12-19) other WHAC Honorable Mention performer,
Taylor Seiss, netted her first points of the contest, a jumper and a three-pointer to end the run and cut the margin back to seven.
Brooke Gerbers answered a Crusaders trey with one of her own to keep the deficit to seven, but an 18-1 run by MU pushed the lead to 24, 39-15. Tech scored the final five points of the half, but trailed by 19.
The Warriors continued to fight in the second half, outscoring the home team 36-31 in the final 20 minutes, but it wasn't enough to recover from the large first half deficit. The Crusaders led by as many as 25 points in the contest, but Tech outscored MU 17-6 in the final six minutes for the final 14-point margin.
The Warriors shot 36.2 percent (21-for-58) from the field including an 8-for-22 (36.4%) performance from behind the arc while finishing 6-of-7 (85.7%) from the charity stripe. Madonna continued to shoot well against the Orange and Black, finishing 27-for-55 (49.1%) from the floor while shooting 50 percent (9-of-18) from the long range.
Tech had three players, Seiss, Carver and Gerbers each finish with 10 points while junior
Rayana Villalpando led the team with six rebounds.
The loss ends the season for the Warriors who will look to add a few more pieces and challenge for a conference crown next season.
