SOMERVILLE, Tenn. – The Indiana Tech baseball team escaped the snowy, cold weather this weekend, traveling to Fayette County Tennessee where they faced Brescia University and Shawnee State in a two-team doubleheader at Fayette Academy.
The Warriors (2-3) registered their first two wins of the season, defeating Brescia 8-1 before dismantling the Bears of SSU, 10-2. A complete game from starter
Chase Keathley highlighted the first victory while
Jared Harvey and
James McReynolds combined to allow just two runs over seven innings in the second contest with Harvey getting the win, going four innings and allowing just two runs, one earned.
Keathely (1-1) was nearly untouchable in his second start as the junior right-hander tossed a complete-game three hitter, allowing just one run, while striking out four.
He got all the run support he needed in the first inning as a pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt by
Romer Portes put runners at second and third for
Steve Remesnik who delivered a sacrifice fly RBI and the game's first run.
Mark Carpenter moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Bearcat error and
Kyle Mead, who ran for
Brian Hakes, scored on a
Peyton Newsom double to stake Keathley to a three-run lead.
A two-out home run was the only blemish on Keathley's day and it cut the lead to just two, 3-1. Tech added a run in the fifth as
Chris Gaynor showed why speed is so important, stealing third and scoring on an error to make it 4-1.
The Warriors broke out in the sixth, as a Carpenter double and Portes single pushed the lead to five and a bases loaded walk and hit-by-pitch plated two more runs for the final margin, 8-1.
Derek Morgan was the lone Warrior to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored, but four others recorded a hit and Carpenter scored twice.
In the second game of the day, Harvey improved to 1-1, settling in after a two run first inning to keep the Warriors in the game and propel them to a win.
Two singles and an error plated the first two runs for the Bears, but Harvey closed the door with a pick-off, a strike out and a groundout to end the threat.
The offense got right to work in the bottom of the frame as
Dezmon Nunn led off with a bunt single, stole third, and after a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out, Nunn scored on a
Brian Hakes hit-by-pitch.
Peyton Newsom followed with a two-run double and
Matt Bandor add two more tallies with a single to give Tech a 5-1 lead.
On the mound Harvey permitted just three Bears to reach based over the next three frames and only one hit, allowing the offense to build a lead.
Bandor got the third inning started with a two-out double and scored one batter as
Chris Gaynor traded places with an RBI double.
Zach Fyfe singled in Gaynor and pushed the lead to six, 7-1.
Junior transfer,
James McReynolds, came on in relief in the fifth and had an outstanding debut, going three innings with just two hits, a walk and three strikeouts.
That effort on the mound allowed the offense to add three more runs in the sixth as Nunn and
Kyle Mead scored on back-to-back
Steve Remesnik and
Brian Hakes sacrifice files. Newsom singled home
Zach Pfafman for the final 10-2 margin.
Nunn, Newsom and Bandor each collected a pair of hits with Nunn scoring twice, Newsome scoring once and driving in three while Bandor also scored and had two RBIs.
Bad weather forced the cancelation of Sunday's games so the Warriors will return to action next weekend for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader in New Albany, Indiana against IU-Southeast. First pitch on Friday, Mar. 6 is scheduled for 2 p.m. with Saturday's contest a 1 p.m. start at the Koetter Sports Baseball Complex.
