Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's tennis team remained undefeated against NAIA competition under Head Coach
Brandt Danals with a 5-4 victory over Indiana Wesleyan, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll, on Tuesday.
Playing indoors at the Wildwood Racquet Club the Warriors and Wildcats played a thrilling match that came down to the final doubles competition. After splitting singles play and then the first two doubles matches, the match came down to No. 2 doubles
Fernando Sousa and
Mikel Oscoz against Gavin White and Leonard Mathews. After finishing Tech went up 9-8, the teams played a 22-point tiebreak with Sousa and Oscoz coming out on top, 12-10.
Joaquin Ferrando, the 15th-ranked player in the east region, earned a huge win at No. 1 singles, defeating Kyle Johnson who is 9th in the region and 31st in the nation, 6-3, 7-6, 6-0. Sousa won his singles match, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 and
Nicholas Aguirre also won for the Warriors at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (2-7), 6-2.
In doubles play, Ferrando and Aguirre defeated the regions 4th-ranked team and No. 14 nationally, in the pair of Johnson and Brandon Dubuque, winning 8-6 at No. 1 doubles to help send Tech to a 5-4 win.
"I'm very lucky to coach a great group of guys who continue to work every single day to improve," said Danals. "They deserve all the success they've had this season and I couldn't be happier for them."
The Warriors look to continue their winning ways when they open Wolverine-Hosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Apr. 4 when they travel to Southfield, Mich. to face Lawrence Tech (Mich.) at 1 p.m.
