BRIEF: The Indiana Tech baseball team has now won its last nine games and 14 of 15 after complete a series sweep of Marygrove on Sunday at Ilitch Ballpark, 14-2, 3-0. Once again a strong offensive performance, combined with impressive pitching, was a perfect combination for the win.
FLOW:Â
GAME 1Â
Romer Portes continued to inch closer to .400 and recorded his 59th RBI of the season in the first inning, driving home
Dezmon Nunn who stole his 26th base earlier in the inning.
Â
Both offenses went dormant until the fifth when
Zach Fyfe plated
Caleb Heller with a one-out, RBI double and
Brian Hakes followed with a two-out RBI double of his own to make it a 3-0 game. In the bottom of the inning, the Mustangs used a pair of hits and a Warriors error to plate an unearned run and make it a two score game.
Â
The Orange and Black broke out in the sixth though, scoring six runs on seven hits.
Peyton Newsom got the scoring started with an RBI double while
Chris Gaynor, Fyfe, Hakes and Portes each added run scoring hits.
Â
In the seventh, Tech continued to stretch the lead, scoring a pair of runs on just one hit and a Mustang error with
Derek Morgan and
Kyle Mead each driving in a run. Marygrove answered with an RBI single in the bottom half to cut the lead to nine and extend the game.
Â
In the eighth, the Warriors were able to plate three runs, highlighted by Morgan's two-out, two-run single to push the lead to 12, ending the game via run rule.
GAME 2Â
Jason Sterrett was nearly perfect in his second win, allowing just four baserunners in the contest as the offense did just enough for the victory.
Â
All of the scoring game in the third innings as Tech plated three runs, one earned, on four hits and a pair of errors. After Heller reached via an error and Fyfe singled, Nuun doubled to left center to plate them both and later scored on a throwing error by the Mustangs on a steal of third for the 3-0 margin.
Â
Sterrett allowed a pair of hits in the first inning, a leadoff walk in the second and a one-out walk in the fifth, that was erased on a double play and that was all. Only one runner reached second in the seven inning contest.Â
